Cork Flooring Care And Maintenance

Nonn's Design Showplace offers these guidelines to cleaning, caring for and maintaining your cork flooring installation:

What to DO:

1. Use area rugs on high traffic pathways such as the end of steps, hallways, etc. All rugs should allow floor to breath, so avoid rubber backed or other non-ventilated rugs. If rugs are impractical periodically check for wear.
2. Remove spills promptly. Use a soft cloth and a manufacturer recommended cork floor cleaner to clean spills. Use a vacuum or broom for dry spills.
3. Vacuum or sweep your cork floor regularly.
4. Install felt pad floor protectors on “feet” of furniture.
5. Place mats at exterior doors to trap sand and grit from incoming traffic.

What NOT to do:

1. Do not let sand, dirt or grit build up. They act as abrasives and wear and dull the floor finish.
2. Never damp mop a cork floor. Excessive amounts of water can cause your cork floor to swell and cup.
3. Do not use wax, oil soap, or other household cleaners on your polyurethane finished cork floor. The use of these products can dull today's floor finishes and make refinishing difficult.
4. Avoid walking on cork floors in high heels; they can severely damage it.
5. Keep pets claws properly trimmed to avoid excessive scratches and gouges.
