Cork bark is harvested primarily in Portugal, Spain and Tunisia from the cork oak tree. Once harvested, the cork bark grows back in approximately nine years. Suberin is the primary component of the cork bark and is responsible for its resiliency. Suberin is comprised of a mixture of fatty acids and heavy organic alcohols. Cork is resistant to fire and insects, is unaffected by water and is impermeable to gas and other liquids.
