This month's design tips and ideas:

Starting With The Basic Ingredients

When choosing selections for your home, whether a new home or a remodel, it is important to start with the basics: flooring, countertops and cabinets. These are the most permanent aspects of your home and therefore the least likely to be changed. While it can seem boring to choose these all in neutral tones, there are plenty of other ways to add something more to your space.

You can add a little sparkle to your kitchen or bathroom with a fun accent tile. Choose a neutral tone for the main tile of your shower or backsplash and add the accent in small amounts. Decorative tiles are usually more expensive, but in smaller amounts become affordable. It can even be a neutral color accent tile, but if it's glass, natural stone, metal or a combination adding the different texture will give it just the right accent to the room.

Paint is probably the easiest way to add color, as well as the easiest thing to change over time. Whether it is a light color or bold and bright, it will change the look of the space instantly. Want to try something different? Paint the walls a light color and the ceiling a bold accent color, it adds something very different to your room.

Accessories are another way to add a little character to a room. Select a piece of art or accent pillow that inspires you and pull colors from them in order to choose your other accessories. Accent towels in the bathroom, a lamp in the bedroom, or decorative plates in the kitchen are easy enough to change and can even be changed with the seasons.

Starting with the basic ingredients to your home, the flooring, cabinets and countertops is important. Adding color and texture with accessories or paint is like the frosting on the cake!
